Fight for the release of the secret fire ants ERADICATION report!

Send your ministers an email calling for the release of the eradication report!

How to help  |  Take action

Australia is perilously close to losing the war against red fire ants.

But right now, instead of taking action, our governments have only one thing in mind: delay, delay, delay. They are refusing to release an independently written report that details what needs to be done to eradicate these dangerous invasive ants.

We know the report reviews the current fire ant eradication program and we’ve been told it concludes Australia’s federal, state and territory governments need to urgently boost the program’s funding. We don’t know what motive our governments have for keeping the pages of the eradication report secret, but this inaction is putting us and our environments at risk.

We’ve tried every option we can to get this eradication report released and have been pushed back at every turn. That’s why we urgently need your help.

We need you to demand the ministers responsible for funding fire ant management release the eradication report before it’s too late!

The current eradication program has been relatively successful at containing Australia’s red imported fire ant outbreak to the greater Brisbane area. But this effort is starting to show big cracks. Fire ants have just been detected on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) for the first time. On the mainland, they have now spread south to within 12 kilometres of the NSW border and are inching west closer to the Murray-Darling river catchment. If they reach it, their rafting abilities could wash them deep into NSW, Victoria and South Australia.

When fire ant nests are disturbed, or they identify new prey, they can rise up in their thousands to swarm and sting their target en masse. These swarms can kill small native animals, young livestock and pets. Red fire ants will devastate our national parks and can wipe out entire native ecosystems, turning bustling bushland silent. In the most extreme cases, their stings have even triggered fatal anaphylactic shock in people.

If we don’t stop their spread now, modelling shows fire ants could spread to every corner of the continent.

Every Australian should be concerned about a future with wall-to-wall fire ants. You’d have to be on guard every time you went outdoors, scouring backyards, playgrounds and dog parks to keep kids and pets safe from new fire ant nests.  We’d have to spend billions across the country every year on intensive baiting programs to keep our greenspaces, gardens and homes habitable. We’d lose pets, wildlife and livestock. We’d lose gardens and campsites. We’d lose people.

The Australian way of life is on the line and our governments are trying to shelve the problem for later. We have a right to know what’s in the eradication report. Take action for nature and future generations by demanding the eradication report be released NOW!
