The Invasive Species Council has lodged a submission opposing applications to add 10 freshwater loach species to Australia’s Live Import List.
The applicants, the Pet Industry Association of Australia, claim the species would not cause problems if they escaped or were released into the environment. We disagree. Several are large, long-lived and suited to the climate of northern and eastern Australia. Some also appear to be already traded in Australia despite not being approved for import.
Our greatest concern is disease. Under current import conditions, these loaches would generally receive a visual inspection and seven days in quarantine under arrangements based on a 1999 risk analysis. There would be no testing for pathogens or parasites specific to these species, including infections that may not be visible during inspection.
We have asked the Environment Minister to refuse the applications and require a rigorous assessment of the disease, environmental and biosecurity risks before any of these species are considered for listing.
