Protect our bushland:
Stop the sale of invasive weeds
Three-quarters of Australia’s worst weeds started as garden plants. We cannot keep selling species that escape, spread and devastate our bush. Add your name to help stop it.
We all know weeds like lantana and blackberries are choking our waterways and bushland. But the next invasion could already be starting — in someone’s backyard.
Around three-quarters of Australia’s worst weeds began as garden plants. Sold legally in nurseries and online, often to people who had no idea they were buying something that could escape and cause lasting damage.
Once these plants spread into forests, wetlands, and national parks, they are incredibly difficult and costly to control. Some fuel more intense fires. Others smother native plants and destroy habitat for wildlife.
And yet, the responsibility still falls on everyday shoppers to know which plants are safe and which are not. You shouldn’t need specialist knowledge just to choose what to plant in your garden.
This is a system failure.
Governments have the power to stop the sale of high-risk invasive species before they become the next environmental crisis. While there has been some progress, it is far too slow for the scale of the threat.
Right now, plants capable of overwhelming ecosystems and pushing native species towards extinction are still being sold legally.
That has to change.
We’re calling on Minister for the Environment and Water, Murray Watt to:
- Introduce clear, nationally consistent rules to prevent the sale of known and high-risk invasive plant species,
- Shift responsibility away from individual consumers by ensuring harmful plants are not available for purchase in the first place,
- Strengthen regulation of nurseries and online plant sales to close existing loopholes,
- Invest in early intervention and prevention, where action is most effective and cost-efficient.
The solutions are clear. What’s missing is the political will to act at the scale and speed this crisis demands.
When enough people speak up, governments listen. Your voice can help push this issue to the top of the agenda and turn plans into action.

Your donation is a lifeline for Aussie wildlife.
Invasive species destroy our natural places and transform the landscape, leaving our native animals without shelter or food and natural systems destroyed. You can help create an Australia where our unique wildlife is safe in flourishing protected areas.
