Feral deer have become Australia’s biggest environmental catastrophe.
Now being called ‘Australia’s next rabbit plague,’ If we don’t act immediately, scientists predict that feral deer will overrun every habitat in Australia.
Years of inaction and a lack of coordinated effort have already allowed feral deer populations to skyrocket tenfold to an estimated 2 million across the country!
In Victoria alone, a plague of over a million feral deer have taken over most of the state’s national parks, including fragile alpine regions.
World Heritage areas in Tassie’s wilderness, the Blue Mountains, ancient Gondwanan rainforests and Queensland’s Wet tropics are being trampled, trashed and polluted, leaving critically endangered Aussie battlers like the smoky mouse and the southern brown bandicoot with their homes and food eaten away or trampled into the ground.
Native trees and plants are ringbarked, killed or eaten. Bush and forest regenerating from fire also struggles to grow back when grazed on by feral deer.
We URGENTLY need our national treasures – with species found nowhere else on Earth – protected from the onslaught of invasive species before they are destroyed forever.
Over 60,0000 Australians have signed the petition to Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek to call for increased funding and urgent action to stop invasive species-led destruction, deaths and extinctions in Australia.
We need at least 100,000 to make sure this message cannot be ignored!
If we do nothing to control feral deer then everybody loses, but if governments and landholders step up, we can stop the spread, reduce the negative impacts, and protect our precious places.
Sign the petition and help us stop the spread of feral deer before it’s too late.
