Tell the senate to take action!
Send a submission to the Australian Senate demanding urgent action on fire ants.
It’s happened.
Fire ants have jumped the border from Queensland into northern New South Wales, with nests found as far as Murwillumbah and in the Currumbin Valley.
If they continue to spread, our way of life will change forever.
They might be tiny, but fire ants are deadly. They work in highly cooperative super-colonies that swarm in the hundreds of thousands, relentlessly stinging everything in their path.
In 2021, an independent review found for Australia to completely eradicate fire ants, an investment between $200 to $300 million per year, for over 10 years would be needed. So far, only $149 million per year has been committed to combat fire ants until 2027.
The USA failed to prioritise their eradication program and it now costs the industry and agriculture sector a shocking US$7 billion a year to manage. In Australia, it’s estimated that figure would be up to $2 billion each year — dwarfing the total cost of eradication.
Right now, the Senate is accepting submissions from the public on the future of fire ants in Australia. Together, we can call for a long-term commitment to eradication, increased funding and resources to stop fire ants from spreading any further.
