The Invasive Species Council has welcomed the announcement today by federal Agriculture Minister Murray Watt of a new Sustainable Biosecurity Funding Advisory Panel to give stakeholders a say on biosecurity priorities and funding.
The Invasive Species Council has been invited by the Minister to join this new panel.
“We welcome the announcement by Minister Watt of the new Sustainable Biosecurity Funding Advisory Panel,” said Andrew Cox, Invasive Species Council CEO.
“The Invasive Species Council looks forward to actively participating in this new forum to ensure that environmental biosecurity has greater funding and focus to protect our wildlife and ecosystems from deadly invasive species.
“Australia is in the midst of an invasive-species led extinction crisis, but sadly environmental biosecurity has not been prioritised or adequately resourced under successive governments.
“Feral animals, weeds and pests are driving more than 80 per cent of Australia’s most vulnerable native plants and animals towards extinction,” said Mr Cox.
