Hi {Name (First):1.3},
Thank you for choosing to write to your local minister to request dedicated funding for the feral cat plan.
You don’t have to be an expert or have lots of time to do this. We’ve drafted a sample email below but you can personalise it to make yours stand out.
Step 1: Copy the draft content below.
Step 2: Create a new email and address it to: {TAS MLA Email:34} (this is your local MPs email address).
Step 3: Paste the draft content from below in the new email window.
Step 4: Adapt the content and personalise it as much as you wish – don’t forget to add your own subject line.
Step 5: Hit send and feel good about doing your bit!
Thank you! We realise this is different to other letter writing campaigns you may have seen – that’s because sending an email from your own email address has a greater impact and you are more likely to get a response directly.
Thank you!
Some things to remember:
- Keep it short and focus on the issue.
- Make it personal – how are cats impacting native animals in your area? Why do you care?
- Be respectful.
- Ask your local MP to call on federal environment minister Tanya Plibersek for dedicated funds of at least $88 million over four years to protect our native wildlife from feral cats.
- Make sure your full name and address is at the bottom of the email – this confirms to an MP that you are in their electorate and they will take it more seriously.
Draft email content to your local MP regarding action to protect wildlife from feral cats.
Dear {TAS MLA Title:36} {TAS MLA Last Name:38},
I am writing to you as a constituent of the electorate of {Select your electorate TAS:35} because I am very concerned about the impact that feral and roaming pet cats are having on Australia’s wildlife.
Feral cats have already played a major role in the extinction of over 20 of Australia’s native mammals and even more will become extinct if the government doesn’t take urgent action.
I was really pleased to see Environment Minister Plibersek declare that action to protect our wildlife from feral cats is a priority for the Albanese Government and release a draft 10 year action plan. However, I am very concerned that there is no new funding for this plan. Without adequate funding, it will be no more than words.
As my local MP, I am therefore asking you to write to Minister Plibersek to ask her to:
- Commit at least $88 million in new funding to protect our wildlife from feral cats in the 2024 federal budget.
- Work with the states and territories to ensure pet cats are kept safely at home and not preying on our native wildlife.
- Commit to eradicate feral cats on Australia’s islands and to expanding Australia’s network of predator-free wildlife havens.
Feral cats kill over 1.5 billion native mammals, birds, reptiles and frogs every year. If the Australian Government doesn’t fund genuine action on feral cats, I’m afraid we will lose even more of our native wildlife.
I look forward to your support and response.
Kind Regards,
