Australia is facing a plant extinction event of the magnitude not seen in recent history, and it has been exacerbated by our outdated national environment laws.
The latest science tells us that myrtle rust, an invasive fungal disease, which made its way into the country in 2010, could send 16 rainforest trees extinct in a generation. This is a fungus that stops key rainforest trees, like native myrtles, turpentines and guavas from growing and reproducing.
The frustrating thing is this could have been prevented if action was taken sooner. Australia’s environmental laws failed to recognise this deadly invader as a key threat before it arrived, then failed to put in place a plan to stop its arrival and to deal with it once it had taken hold. This devastating fungal disease has been allowed to wreak havoc in Queensland’s rainforests and drive species like the native guava toward extinction.
And the bad news is the situation is getting worse. Myrtle rust has found its way into the Kimberley in WA.
The system is broken. We need better laws and policies to deal with threats to nature like myrtle rust. And the opportunity to act is upon us. Please let Minister Plibersek know you support strong laws and systems that protect nature and prevent any more extinctions.
