Help end the feral horse crisis in Kosciuszko
Feral horses are trashing and trampling alpine waterways and pushing native wildlife closer to extinction. Tell your NSW MP to end special protections for invasive species.
A bill has just been introduced into the NSW Parliament that could finally fix one of the most damaging and bizarre environmental laws in the country – the law that gives special protections to feral horses in Kosciuszko National Park.
For years, the Wild Horse Heritage Act has allowed feral horses to trash, trample and pollute, fragile alpine landscapes and mountain streams across Kosciuszko – driving threatened species like the broad-toothed rat and corroboree frog to the brink of extinction.
‘Australians would never accept laws that protect wild pigs, goats or foxes over native wildlife – so why are feral horses treated differently?’ – Dr Joe McGirr MP
In May, a parliamentary debate was triggered after we submitted a paper petition signed by over 11,000 people calling for the urgent repeal of the Wild Horse Heritage Act. The debate was telling – not a single MP spoke in defense of the existing law.
The introduction of the Kosciuszko Wild Horse Heritage Repeal Bill 2025 marks a significant milestone in the campaign to restore Kosciuszko National Park and protect native wildlife and alpine rivers from the damaging impacts of feral horses.
But if we’re going to get it over the line, we need strong environmental leadership and political parties from across the divide to unite in support of the Bill.
That will only happen if every NSW Member of Parliament hears just how strongly their community supports the reform.
Our team has been working hard behind the scenes, meeting with politicians, generating media coverage and building momentum for change. But the most powerful voice they can hear right now is yours.
This may look a bit different to other petitions you’ve signed – but sending a direct email from your own account is one of the most powerful actions you can take to protect the wildlife and fragile waterways of Kosciuszko National Park. We know that MP’s and decision makers take it seriously when constituents like you speak up.
