The Invasive Species Council welcomes the Victorian tribunal’s ruling against pro-brumby activists for the appalling racial vilification of Yorta Yorta woman, Aunty Monica Morgan.
The tribunal has ordered the group to apologise to Monica, her family and the Yorta Yorta people.
‘Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Racism, homophobia, and aggressive threats, both online and in person, are far too common from a loud minority within this movement. This behaviour is unacceptable and must stop,’ Richard Swain, Indigenous Ambassador, Invasive Species Council said.
‘This is exposing the disrespect that this group show Aboriginal people who want to protect Country, which is indicative of their disrespect to Country by wanting to protect a feral animal.
‘Park staff in NSW and Victoria are also copping similar abuse while doing their best to protect Country for all of us.
‘Anyone who thinks feral horses aren’t hard on Country doesn’t understand horses.
‘These animals trample our fragile Country, pollute our streams and disrupt totems and sacred sites that hold deep cultural and spiritual significance.
‘Protecting Country is not just about conservation, it is about preserving our culture, stories, and identity.
‘If modern Australians were connected to Country we, we wouldn’t have half the problems we have.
‘We are urging the government to listen to First Nations voices and establish a Commissioner for Country to ensure Indigenous perspectives are central to tackling the invasive species mega threat and allow our Country to heal once and for all.’
