Email your federal MP
Ask your local MP to call on Minister Tanya Plibersek to fund the Cat Abatement Plan (TAP).
In September, on Threatened Species Day, the federal environment minister, Tanya Plibersek revealed an updated 10 year feral cat action plan. This plan is designed to coordinate national action to protect our most vulnerable wildlife from cats and give them a chance to thrive.
The release of the plan on this date was deliberate. Cats kill more than 1.5 billion native mammals, birds and reptiles every year and have played a major role in the extinction of over 20 of Australia’s native mammals.
The feral cat plan is a detailed, comprehensive document. For the first time, all states and territories have provided in-principle support for the plan, which is an important step forward.
The plan focuses on protecting the native species that are most susceptible to predation by feral cats. It also includes a range of actions to address the issue of roaming pet cats across Australia.
The biggest problem with the feral cat plan is that there is no obligation to fund it. This needs to change.
You can join others calling on your local MP for change. Write a personal email to your local MP, asking them to call on Minister Tanya Plibersek for dedicated funds of at least $88 million over the next four years to implement the feral cat plan.
